1- A high-flying engine

A strong technological choice

The Rafale E-Tech 4×4 300 hp engine was designed on the technical basis of the E-Tech hybrid 200 hp powertrain, to which is added an electric motor on the rear axle and a rechargeable battery with a substantial capacity of 22 kWh. This gives Rafale a range in 100% electric mode of up to 100 kilometers (WLTP*).

Managed by E-Tech technology, the combination of the combustion engine, the three electric motors and the battery offers 300 hp and a permanently optimized output: enough to provide a performance / efficiency ratio at the best level on the market. The combined WLTP consumption is set at 0.7l / 100 km, and remains measured at 5.8 liters / 100 km with an empty battery, thanks to the efficiency of the combustion engine and the high capacity of the battery (WLTP approval in progress).

A unique plug-in hybrid engine

Under the hood, the 1.2L 3-cylinder thermal engine adopts a new turbocharger, which increases its power to 110 kW or 150 horsepower (versus 96 kW or 130 horsepower of the E-Tech 200 hp version) and its torque to 230 Nm (versus 205 Nm). The multimode dog gearbox is adapted to these developments.

On this thermal base are coupled three electric motors (2 main and 1 secondary) for a maximum cumulative power of 300 hp:

  • the main electric motor on the front axle developing 50 kW (70 hp) and 205 Nm of torque
  • the second main electric motor permanently connected to the rear axle with 100 kW (136 horsepower) and 195 Nm of torque
  • the secondary electric motor of type HSG (High-voltage Starter Generator) of 25 kW (34 hp) and 50 Nm of torque.

In dynamic driving, the combination of the different engines delivers its full potential and offers the following performances:

  • 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 sec (vs 8.9 for the E-Tech hybrid 200 hp)
  • 80 to 120 km/h in 4.0 sec (vs 5.6 for the E-Tech hybrid 200 hp)
  • 1,000 meters from a standing start in 26.9 seconds

Powered by a 22 kWh/400V lithium-ion battery, the two main motors provide electric driving. For its part, the secondary electric motor of the HSG (High-voltage Starter Generator) type ensures the starting of the thermal engine, the gear changes of the automatic gearbox, and contributes to the recharging of the battery.

At maximum accepted charging power of 7.4 kW (32A), a full battery recharge takes:

  • 2h10 for 0 to 80%
  • 2h55 for 0 to 100 %

“Rafale is at the crossroads of two historic Renault lines. On the one hand, it embraces the heritage of sportiness with high-performance sedans such as the R21 Turbo and Safrane Baccara Biturbo, and on the other hand, that of innovation with concepts such as the MPV, the turbo or the E-Tech hybrid engines.”

Grégory Launay, Revenue Leader Renault Rafale

All of Alpine’s expertise in a specific chassis

In addition to the Esprit Alpine finish common to the E-Tech hybrid 200 hp version, Rafale E-Tech 4×4 300 hp is offered in a new Atelier Alpine version. An evocative name that highlights the advanced know-how brought to Renault by Alpine Cars. The result of this pooling of talents is to offer the “Alpine experience” at the wheel of Renault Rafale. Concretely, the Atelier Alpine chassis has been optimized by more than ten dedicated Alpine Cars engineers with:

  • The development of specific parts: shock absorbers, springs, bump stops, front and rear anti-roll bars and 21-inch wheels
  • The technical development of controlled damping (active suspension with predictive camera)
  • The development of specific modes of Agility Control (see the dedicated paragraph p5)
  • Calibration of the computers controlling braking, brake regeneration, stability and trajectory control as well as power steering
  • Expert support for coupling the engine to the chassis and for Continental sports tires

Specific stylistic attributes

Rafale E-Tech 4×4 300 hp Atelier Alpine stands out from the rest of the range with its exclusive Satin Summit Blue body color, a floating spoiler in Starry Black and specific 21-inch “Chicane” rims fitted with Continental tires (20-inch rims for the Esprit Alpine finish). A sporty nod to the Alpine brand, the interior of Rafale E-Tech 4×4 300 hp Esprit Alpine and Atelier Alpine is adorned with a floor carpet in the iconic blue color of the arrowed A.

An active suspension never seen before at Renault

Rafale E-Tech 4×4 300 hp Atelier Alpine stands out from the Esprit Alpine version with a new intelligent controlled suspension, coupled with a camera located at the top of the windshield. Called Active Suspension with Predictive Camera, this system takes into account the speed and actions of the driver to constantly adapt the damping according to upcoming obstacles such as a speed bump or a damaged road surface.

An innovative Agility Control

In the multimedia screen, a menu named “Chassis Control” specific to Rafale Atelier Alpine allows the driver to adjust the 4Control Advanced parameters, the damping rules and the rear steering angles according to the following three axes:

  • Comfort, ideal for daily journeys, especially in the city.
  • Dynamic for a compromise between agility and good level of filtration.
  • Sport focusing on course holding and driving pleasure.

These Agility Control settings are accessible with all driving modes (Eco, Comfort, Sport and Perso) except Snow mode.
Given the multiplicity of adjustable technologies available on the Atelier Alpine version (4 engines, 4-wheel drive, 4-wheel steering, regenerative braking and controlled suspension), the choice between 3 modes allows you to customize Rafale according to the driver’s wishes with ease.
Developed by Alpine engineers, the settings for each mode ensure that you drive Rafale Atelier Alpine in an optimal configuration.

100% electric car services on a daily basis

Renault Rafale E-Tech 4×4 300 hp is equipped with a substantial 22 kWh rechargeable battery operating on 400V. A full charge of the latter allows a range of up to 100 km (WLTP* cycle) in 100% electric mode. A driving capacity that encourages regular recharging on a socket.

If the battery charge level allows it, 100% electric driving is activated by default in Comfort and Eco modes and maintained according to the driver’s requests. It can also be “forced” by selecting “Electric” mode via the EV MODE button located on the central armrest. This choice of energy is maintained for a power requirement of up to 160 horsepower and a maximum speed of 135 km/h.

This EV MODE button allows, via a drop-down menu, to activate one of the following 3 modes:

  • Hybrid (enabled by default)
  • Electric activating “forced” rolling in 100% electric
  • E-save using the thermal engine from start-up, in order to charge the battery up to 25%, to prepare for arrival in an urban area for example

On a daily basis, Renault Rafale E-Tech 4×4 300 hp operates like a 100% electric car and provides the same type of driving sensations, particularly in terms of operating silence and responsiveness to acceleration. At the wheel, this pleasure is enhanced by regenerative braking adjustable via steering wheel paddles.
