New BMW i7 M70 xDrive
New BMW i7 M70 xDrive
With the BMW i7 M70 xDrive, BMW M offers a high-performance all-electric model at the top of the BMW 7 Series range. Within the overall BMW Group range, it is the highest-performance model with a fully electric drive. Equipped with an electric motor on the front and rear axles generating a maximum power of 660 hp (485kW) and an M-specific chassis, the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive offers a perfect combination of electric mobility and performance, which translates with a unique driving experience in the luxury segment. The top model of the new BMW 7 Series range accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, making it the fastest all-electric BMW model. The maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.
With this new performance record for 100% electric vehicles, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive also marks a new step for BMW M GmbH on the path to transformation towards electric mobility. The luxury sedan is already the third M Performance model to be equipped with a fully electric drive. The BMW i7 M70 xDrive will be previewed at the Auto Shanghai international motor show (April 18-27, 2023) in China. The global market launch will begin in the second half of 2023.
The most powerful BMW electric model
The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology used in the BMW i7 is undergoing continuous development to improve both performance and efficiency. The new BMW i7 M70 xDrive has highly integrated drive units on the front and rear axles, in which the electric motor, power electronics and transmission are brought together very compactly in a common housing.
A design specific to the M brand based on the principle of a synchronous machine excited by a current allows the electric motor placed on the rear axle of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive to achieve unrivaled power density. With a value of 2.41 kW/kg, it is currently BMW’s most efficient electric motor.
This new power record is achieved thanks to an innovation patented by the BMW Group, which uses six excitation coils in the stator of the electric motor instead of the usual three. This allows the electric machine to generate extremely high power in a lightweight and compact design and to deliver it continuously in high speed ranges. It is significantly superior to a drive solution with two motors on the rear axle in terms of power density, but also in terms of efficiency.
Maximum power with M Sport Boost and M Launch Control.
The motor acting on the rear axle generates a maximum power of 489 hp (360kW). In precisely controlled interaction with the 258 hp (190 kW) electric motor on the front axle, an electric all-wheel drive is created with a system torque of 1,015 Nm in Sport mode and up to 1,100 Nm when M Launch Control and M Sport Boost function are activated. The BMW i7 M70 xDrive thus generates exceptional traction power.
In the M Launch Control function, drive torque control and traction control are integrated into the engine control unit. Thus, the power generated by the electric motors is precisely controlled, so that it can be converted into thrilling performance without loss of traction.
The M Sport Boost function can be activated by pressing the shift paddle on the left side of the steering wheel and is brought to life using M Performance-specific graphics in the instrument cluster. It is also authentically accompanied by a particularly emotionally powerful M Performance-specific sound, which is part of Hans Zimmer’s BMW IconicSounds Electric function.
High autonomy at long distances with the new MAX RANGE function
The extreme dynamic performance of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive is combined with great ability to cover long distances. With a usable energy content of 101.7 kWh, the high-voltage battery located in the vehicle’s underbody allows the BMW i7 M70 xDrive to achieve a range of 488 to 560 kilometers according to the WLTP test cycle. Using the new MAX RANGE function, the range can be increased by approximately 15-25% by selectively limiting the drive power and maximum speed, in combination with reducing the comfort functions.
The Combo Charging Unit’s advanced charging system promotes efficiency and speed when charging the standard high-voltage storage unit, with power up to 22 kW for AC and 195 kW for direct current. It is therefore possible to increase the range by 170 kilometers (WLTP) in 10 minutes when stopping at a high-power charging station.
M-specific suspension technology optimizes dynamics and comfort
The M-specific application of all control systems for the electric all-wheel drive, steering, shock absorbers and driving dynamics systems creates the conditions for combining the dynamics, agility and response precision characteristic of M with a high level of comfort over long distances.
Standard suspension technology in the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive includes two-axle adaptive air suspension with automatic self-leveling and electronically controlled shock absorbers whose response is optimized using a brand-specific hydraulic system. ActiveDrive 4-wheel steering and the Executive Drive Pro suspension package including active roll stabilization with active roll comfort are also standard equipment. The package also includes an M sports brake system and 21-inch M light alloy wheels.
Individual aura is a sign of superior performance
The exterior design of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive distinguishes itself from other models in the series with exclusive design elements and characteristic M design elements, oriented towards the technical requirements of a decidedly sporty driving style. Its highly individual aura signals exceptional dynamic performance and reveals its power potential at first glance.
The front design reinterprets the typical elements of the brand such as the twin circular headlights and the BMW grille. The impressive presence generated from the front is further emphasized by the contour line lighting of the BMW radiator grille. In combination with the optional M Performance package, it is combined for the first time on the BMW i7 M70 xDrive with a radiator grille surround in gloss black. On the sides and rear of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive, M design elements such as the M exterior mirrors with characteristic double bar, the M side skirts and the model-specific rear skirt with diffuser clearly underline the character performance of the top-of-the-range model.
New two-tone paint, Frozen paints based on biomass
The new BMW i7 M70 xDrive is available in a wide range of body paints. Customers can also choose from more than 100 BMW Individual special paints. The BMW Individual Two-Tone paint, which can now include special BMW Individual paints, offers a particularly extravagant look. Among other options, it is possible to combine the paintwork BMW Individual Liquid Copper metallic for the lower part of the body and Saphirschwarz metallic for the upper part of the body.
The Frozen paints available for the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive are produced using an innovative process based on biomass and not petroleum. During the process, the product formulation is not changed, only the raw materials used come from sustainable sources.
Innovative features for luxurious travel comfort
Highlights, which also give the top model its progressive luxury character and make long-distance journeys very comfortable, include the BMW Interaction Bar in the cockpit and the Executive Lounge with optimized reclining function in the rear. The BMW Theater Screen and Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System transform the rear into an exclusive private cinema room on wheels. The high level of comfort and safety is further optimized with advanced automated driving and parking systems. For example, Parking Assistant and Maneuvering Assistant can now be controlled via the My BMW app.
The optional automatic doors can be opened and closed both via the My BMW app and with the BMW Digital Key Plus using a smartphone. Thanks to the advanced lock/unlock function, the driver’s door opens automatically as soon as the smartphone on which the individual BMW Plus digital key is installed approaches the vehicle. After getting into the vehicle, the driver’s door can be closed by pressing the brake pedal, among other possibilities for opening and closing the door.
A sporty look and maximum personalization of the interior
M-specific equipment in the interior underlines the sporty flair of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive. Its range of standard equipment includes illuminated M door sill trims, M Merino leather upholstery in Schwarz/Atlasgrau, M leather steering wheel, M-specific displays on the BMW Curved Display and an M footrest for the driver.
Options include the BMW Individual Interior Package and BMW Individual Interior with exclusive features in a total of nine color variants. The BMW Individual Merino leather/cashmere wool combination with exclusive features is also available in black/dark gray.
