New BMW 5 Series Sedan
New BMW 5 Series Sedan
More dynamic than ever, equipped with a multitude of digital innovations and, for the first time, fully electric engines: this is how the new BMW 5 Series Sedan is revealed. Under the name BMW i5, the new generation of the world’s most popular road sedan is paving the way for sustainable mobility in the premium vehicle segment.
The launch of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will begin in October 2023. The new generation of models will be offered worldwide with fully electric and Plug-in Hybrid engines, but also with highly efficient Petrol and Diesel engines, including 48 V Mild Hybridization. Like all previous generations, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan is produced at the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing, where the electric motors and high-voltage batteries for the BMW i5 are also manufactured.
Sporty elegance and striking presence thanks to a new design language.
A clear design language underlines the sporty elegance and presence of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. Compared to the previous generation, the new edition of the BMW 5 Series has gained 97 millimeters in length to reach 5.06 meters, 32 millimeters in width to reach 1.90 meters and 36 millimeters in height to reach 1,515 meters. Its wheelbase has been extended by 20 millimeters to reach 2,995 meters.
The front of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan is characterized by a modern interpretation of the twin headlights and the BMW radiator grille. Almost vertically arranged LED elements serve as turn signals and daytime running lights. The BMW grille, which projects far forward, has a wide surround and BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting (available as an option).
On the side, the high shoulder line, the powerfully designed surfaces and the two precisely drawn character lines shape the athletic body of the vehicle. Also eye-catching are the black side skirts, flush door handles and the number 5 embossed at the base of the C-pillar. Dynamically stretched proportions flow into a powerful rear. The flat taillights divided by a chrome strip expressively interpret the brand’s characteristic L-shape.
The dynamic character of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan can be further enhanced by the M Sport Package or the M Sport Pro Package, both available as options. The range of body colors already includes three BMW Individual colors available from launch.
When driving pleasure and comfort are combined with innovation.
The new BMW 5 Series Sedan offers ideal conditions for enjoying typical BMW driving pleasure in everyday life and a high level of comfort on long journeys. The atmosphere of the new interior evolves within a pure and modern design, characterized by generous space for its occupants as well as the use of high quality materials. In addition, thanks to careful finishing focused on technology and increased acoustic comfort, occupants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will enjoy driving pleasure specific to the brand.
The cockpit of the new BMW 5 Series has a significantly reduced number of buttons and controls compared to the previous generation. This result was obtained thanks to the systematic digitalization of functions. The large curved screen BMW Curved Display reinterprets the brand’s idea of orienting the cockpit towards the driver. The fully digital display system consists of a 12.3-inch information screen and a 14.9-inch control screen. The steering wheel has also been redesigned with a flattened bottom and haptic feedback on the control panels, as well as on the center console selector lever. The BMW Interaction Bar is another highlight. This backlit functional unit, in crystalline structure, extends across the entire width of the dashboard, and includes touch controls.
A first for BMW: an entirely vegan interior.
The new BMW 5 Series Sedan features new sports seats as standard equipment. The Comfort seats, offered as an option, offer a wide range of electrical adjustment possibilities. This new generation of BMW 5 Series is also the brand’s first model to offer a fully vegan interior as standard. This includes the seating surfaces, dashboard and door panels, as well as the steering wheel. The seat surfaces of the Veganza version with leather-like properties are also optionally available with decorative perforation. Other optional equipment includes BMW Individual Merino Leather upholstery in several two-tone variants.
The BMW i5 M60 xDrive as the top model.
The BMW i5, a 100% electric model, is equipped with the significantly improved 5th generation BMW eDrive technology and is being launched in two versions. The first of the two new purely electric engines is incorporated in the M60 version. Thus, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive has an output of 601 hp (442 kW)* and specific design features. The two motors are integrated into the front and rear axles to form an electric all-wheel drive system. The torque generated by the system can reach 820 Nm when the M Sport Boost function or the M Launch Control function is activated. This allows the BMW i5 M60 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 230 km/h.
The BMW i5 eDrive40 is the second 100% electric version available at launch. Its electric motor drives the rear wheels and generates a maximum power of 340 hp (250 kW*) and a maximum torque of 430 Nm with the Sport Boost or Launch Control function. The BMW i5 eDrive40 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds and has a top speed of 193 km/h.
The space-saving high-voltage battery is housed in the underbody and has a net capacity of 81.2 kWh. In addition to efficient electric motors, the latest version of adaptive energy recovery allows greater absorption of kinetic energy when lifting your foot. Furthermore, judicious use of the heat pump centralizing the heating and cooling of the passenger compartment, the propulsion system and the high-voltage battery contributes to the long range. The respective WLTP ranges are 455 – 516 kilometers for the BMW i5 M60 xDrive and 477 – 582 kilometers for the BMW i5 eDrive40. This new BMW 5 Series also has the recent MAX RANGE function, allowing autonomy to be increased by up to 25% thanks to power and speed limitation, but also by deactivating comfort functions.
*When M Launch Control or M Sport Boost is activated.
Innovative eCharging solutions from BMW Charging.
The BMW i5’s charging unit (CCU) enables AC charging with an output of up to 11 kW as standard, and up to 22 kW as an option. The high-voltage battery can be charged with direct current with a power of up to 205 kW. For example, the BMW i5’s battery charge level can go from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes.
The new BMW i5s are also the brand’s first BMW vehicles that can be used with the Plug & Charge function. This feature allows the vehicle to automatically authenticate at compatible public charging stations without having to use an app or charging card. A unique feature is the multi-contract option, which allows customers to digitally store in the vehicle up to five individual Plug & Charge-compatible electricity contracts from different suppliers.
New gasoline and diesel engines accompanied by 48V mild hybridization technology.
Petrol and Diesel engines designed on the new BMW Group Efficient Dynamics modular generation will be offered in a market-specific selection. They are now equipped with 48V Mild Hybrid technology and are associated as standard with a new 8-speed Sport gearbox.
In France, four-cylinder models will initially be launched on the market, with the BMW 520i with 208 hp as well as the BMW 520d and BMW 520d xDrive with 197 hp each. The range of models will be completed in spring 2024 by two variants equipped with a latest generation Plug-in Hybrid engine. A new inline six-cylinder diesel engine will be available for the BMW 5 Series Sedan from 2024. A further variant of the BMW i5 with electric all-wheel drive will also follow later in 2024.
A unique balance between driving dynamics and travel comfort.
The BMW 5 Series Sedan’s characteristic balance between maximum sportiness and high-level comfort is once again reinforced in the new generation. To do this, the wheelbase has been extended to become the longest in its segment. Furthermore, the wider tracks on the front and rear axles, an almost perfectly balanced distribution of masses on the axles (50/50 ratio), intelligent lightweight construction and increased rigidity of the connections between the body and the chassis contribute to this.
The state-of-the-art chassis technology, like the control systems, has been developed depending on the model, the associated mass distribution and the corresponding engine technology. It includes direct traction control, an integrated braking system and variable ratio sports steering as standard. A DirectDrive M suspension, an M Sport braking system and the Adaptive Pro suspension (standard on the BMW i5 M60 xDrive) with electronically controlled shock absorbers, IntegralActive 4-wheel steering and new vertical dynamics management are available as options. The Adaptive M Pro suspension (available as an option) also includes active roll stabilization with the Active Roll Comfort feature. 18- or 19-inch light alloy wheels (BMW i5 and Plug-in Hybrid models) are standard equipment. Light alloy wheels, up to 21 inches, and performance tires are available as options.
Increased autonomous driving experience: new Highway Assist, unique Active Lane Change Assist.
A significantly expanded range of automated driving and parking systems is available as standard or as an option for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. An innovative technological package creates the conditions for exceptional functionality.
The highlight of the range is the optional Drive Assist Pro, which includes active cruise control with Stop&Go function, as well as functions such as steering and lane control assistant. In a world first, the system of the new BMW 5 Series also includes Active Lane Change Assist with eye activation. This comfort function achieves a new level of interaction between driver and car. The vehicle suggests a lane change which can be done for the first time by looking in the exterior mirror to confirm the lane change. The Active Lane Change Assist automatically takes over the necessary steering movements, if the traffic situation permits.
The new BMW 5 Series Sedan is equipped as standard with Parking Assistant, including Reversing Assistant. With the optional Park Assist Pro, automated parking and maneuvering over a distance of up to 200 meters can be controlled in the vehicle or using a smartphone outside the vehicle.
Intuitive operation and new digital experiences: BMW iDrive with “QuickSelect” and BMW OS 8.5.
The enhanced BMW iDrive display and control system with “QuickSelect” also contributes to the characteristic driving and traveling experience of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. It is based on the BMW OS 8.5 operating system and features a redesigned home screen with function icons arranged vertically on the driver’s side. The “QuickSelect” function allows direct access to functions without having to go through a submenu. This means that the system has received an improved menu structure, geared towards devices in the consumer electronics sector.
The new BMW iDrive is also combined with the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. It is systematically designed to be used using a touch screen and natural language. In addition, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan also has buttons on the steering wheel and the BMW iDrive controller on the center console. The optional BMW Live Cockpit Navigation Pro includes the BMW Head-Up Display and augmented reality on the control screen or instrument cluster. The BMW Natural Interaction option is also available to control functions using gestures.
On-board video games are making their appearance in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan.
In addition, the BMW OS 8.5 operating system offers a wider range of digital content for information and entertainment, faster update cycles for functions, better information on charging stations for vehicles electrical and optimized access to many specific online services. Video streaming is possible on the control screen, as is an innovative form of in-car video games, presented for the first time in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan with the AirConsole platform. The driver and passengers can play so-called casual games when the vehicle is stationary, for example to fill waiting times while the BMW i5 battery is charging.
Optimized networking with up to four 5G mobile antennas.
Other innovations include the welcome scenario with light show and personalized welcome, which also includes, as an option, the dynamic light carpet. The BMW Digital Key Plus is now available on all smartphones compatible with the iOS or Android operating systems, as well as for the Apple Watch. With two 5G mobile phone antennas as standard and four as an option, the new business sedan offers optimized connectivity and phone quality. The Personal eSim fully integrates the vehicle into the customer’s digital ecosystem.
The new BMW 5 Series Sedan offers a choice of six Personal Modes to provide an immersive vehicle experience. Standard equipment also includes optimized smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. With the Remote Software Updates feature, the vehicle always stays up to date with the latest software. With BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades, customers can also test selected functions free of charge for a period of one month and then reserve them for a specific period.
Digitalization is changing customer expectations at an extremely rapid speed. Individualized treatment adapted to each situation is now mandatory. In addition, proactive and rapid management of needs is more than ever a priority. The market launch of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan allows the BMW Group to respond to this change in customer expectations with the arrival of Proactive Care technology. This technology, which incorporates artificial intelligence, interprets data from the various sensors of the New BMW 5 Series and carries out self-diagnostics to anticipate maintenance needs. The customer is contacted proactively by BMW customer service, in anticipation, in order to be offered the best solutions.
